Amazing Arts and Crafts
Salvadoreans are a very hardworking people, and at the same time they have great artistic ability and imagination. Salvadorean arts and crafts are truly works of art, a sample of the native lifestyle and inheritance.
The town of Ilobasco is quite famous for its clay figurines, specially its miniatures. You can see a little of everything: "gossipy women,"
Noah's arks, plates of typical food, etc. You also have the opportunity of seeing the artists at work as they create and paint all
these beautiful sculptures.
I also like very much the 3D clay houses. My cousins have given me several as gifts and I have arranged them over my mantelpiece in
such a way as to recreate a town street scene, with a sponge painted background of trees and sky.
There are also many beautiful and useful wooden crafts (carved and/or turned on a lathe): sugar bowls, pitchers, plates, wine cups,
drinking cups, ice buckets, etc. Here are some samples (click on the picture to enlarge):
We also met Mr. Rigoberto Rodríguez, a very talented painter who has studied painting in México and at the National University in San Salvador.
I was entranced watching him paint beautiful scenes on ceramic plates, all very fast. I liked them so much that Sonia gave me three as
a gift and I bought nine more, both as presents to give and for my own.

There is no doubt that the artists and crafters of El Salvador are truly ambassadors of the beauty of the country.
