Growing up in El Salvador I used to love to read Mafalda, an endearing cartoon by Quino, creator of Latin-America's best selling cartoon ever! Originally published between 1964-1973, these strips show the world through the eyes of a very mature six-year old. Laced with humor, it is also a commentary on politics and life in general. Granted, as a teenager I sometimes didn't understand the political commentary, particularly when it specifically referred to Argentina's political climate (Quino is from Argentina, and that is where the comic strip takes place) but most of the time the dialogue was universal, and oh so true! I read that this series has been translated to over 15 languages, but of course I read it in the original Spanish. I wonder if most of its message and humor remain as accurate and entertaining or does the series loose anything in the translation. This is truly a most enjoyable collection (I have every volume). Every once in a while I will take one out and reread it and I find it just as refreshing as I did almost thirty years ago. Below there are links to some websites that have samples of the comic strip, but they only present a few strips each. So if you want to read the whole kit-and-caboodle, you can still buy most of the books (some are out of print). Just click on the book links further down the page. I found links to different ISBN numbers for the same title. I don't know if this means that they are different books with different strips each or just a different publishing house version. In any case, I tried to give all possible links. Please note that a new window will open for each link, just close when finished.
