Nine to Five in America's Paradise
Before we head for home, a quick stop at the vegetable market, named "All for the Better." This strange-sounding name comes from one of the old estate place names on the island. The owner of the market happens to live at Estate All for the Better. Other estates have names such as "Judith's Fancy," "La Grande Princesse,"" Williams's Delight," "Fountain River", "Whim", "Peter's Rest," and '"La Reine." They remind us that St. Croix was once owned by the French, the Danes, the English, and several other nations.
![]() Vegetables and fruits are flown in a couple of times a week from other, more agricultural islands, or from Miami. It is only recently that we have been the beneficiaries of such bounty. We used to have to make do with frozen or canned vegetables and fruits, except for a few tired turnips, wilted cabbages, and wrinkled apples lying dejectedly On the market shelves. Now we stock up on salad ingredients and indulge in a tiny box of strawberries for a special treat. The food prices are a good deal higher than in the states, but as we say in the real estate business, it all evens out when you consider our low tax rate and the fact that there's no need to buy Gucci boots or fur coats--and no heating bills either. Shall we have a rum punch before dinner, or a swim at the nearby beach? How about both? Oh, yes. It's the island life for me! And our license plates say it all: It really is America's Paradise.
